As soon as they had descended 100 meters into the crevasse, the atmosphere became quite still again.

“Can’t we stay here and wait for the storm to pass?” Marchenko asked.

“We’ll overload the correction thrusters and eventually run out of fuel,” Francesca said.

Marchenko didn’t have a better idea, so they sank further. They passed the landing they’d noticed earlier.

“I guess the ledge doesn’t help us either, does it?”

“No, Marchenko,” Francesca said. “It’s still too narrow.”

“We could—” Eve said.

“What could we?”

“Nothing, Marchenko. It was a stupid idea. I briefly thought that, yes, we could somehow set up vertically, so we’d need a smaller footprint.”

“That’s unlikely to be feasible,” Marchenko said.

“Yes, I know,” Eve said.

Then Marchenko’s eye dipped back into the cloud layer. He had almost forgotten about it. The images were the same. Down here, the storm had no effect. The shuttle continued to descend. What was Francesca up to? Was there an alternative? He didn’t even ask, because at the moment, only one direction was possible.
